Hospital Again in ‘America’s Best’

Lehigh Valley Hospital ranks among the nation’s top hospitals for the 13th straight year, according to the 2008 U.S. News & World Report guide to “America’s Best Hospitals.” The hospital was recognized this year for gastrointestinal disorders, geriatrics, and—for the eighth time—heart care and heart surgery. Lehigh Valley Hospital has been honored in a total of 28 specialty areas in the past five years alone.

A Green Hospital

The two newest buildings at Lehigh Valley Hospital— Cedar Crest are certified by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the national benchmark for green buildings. The seven-story Kasych Family Pavilion and four-story Center for Advanced Health Care are constructed with recyclable materials and large windows, allowing for more natural light. They also use energyefficient appliances, reflective roofing and smart water management.

Is Your Child Safely Seated?

Proper use of car seats can save children’s lives. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Children under age 13 should always ride in the back seat.
  • Use a rear-facing seat for babies weighing up to 20 pounds (about age 1).
  • Use a forward-facing seat for children 20-40 pounds (about age 4).
  • Use a booster seat after that for children up to 4 feet, 9 inches tall (about age 8).
  • When children are tall enough (4 feet, 9 inches) for an adult seat belt, make sure the lap belt lies across the upper thigh and the shoulder belt across the chest.
  • Read the child safety seat instructions and your vehicle’s owners manual.
  • Don’t use car seats that are secondhand or more than six years old, or have been in a crash.
